What We Do

As there are limitless directions, we listen deeply in order to hone in on a vision.

deMauro + deMauro are drawn toward organic and wild designs featuring native, raw materials, as such plants thrive in the beauty of the East End environment. Each project is an opportunity to listen deeply to the client’s vision, opening possibilities for a design imbued with meaning.

Landscape Design

Working with wild and natural plants, deMauro + deMauro landscape designs are unique and harmonious to the space in which they live. Intuitively interpreting the vision and applying passion to the project, every detail is applied with a deeply personal touch. Each designed space is endowed with beauty and meaning.

A purposefully designed landscape takes into consideration the intricate web of relationships that must be woven to create a successful growing environment. All plants have a specific relationship with sunlight, water, nutrients, and the elements. We take great care in building gardens and spaces that honor the plants’ preferred growing conditions and needs to thrive. Whether considering rotating annuals or monocarpics each summer season or creating an ongoing look with biennials or perennials, we design gardens with the intention to be tolerant of climate conditions and seasonal changes.

As the East End boasts a maritime climate, we spend time analyzing the soil and space for growing to ensure proper drainage. Regular and adequate rainfall allows for endless possibilities with each design, and with it, specific design challenges. Our years of working in an array of growing spaces allows us to choose mulch and materials that create drainage structures supportive of healthy root systems.

We care about the healthy lives of these plants and your relationship with your outdoor garden. In addition to designing the landscape, we work with you, your professionals, or connect you with trusted partners to create an effortless maintenance plan. Depending upon the lifespan and hardiness of the plants chosen for your design, plants may need to be covered or removed before the winter season’s first frost.

Gardens

Gardens designed with the native, wild environment in mind create spaces of lavish, limitless beauty. We will help you choose the best plants for your garden, and design the arrangement of these plants to fit within the micro-climates of the space. We can help you select plants for “special purposes,” whether desired for their particular fragrance, ability to attract birds and butterflies, or display of color. When selecting plants, we consider the whole plant, its size, shape, density, and natural ability to thrive in the conditions of the space.

During our initial conversations, we will walk with you through your outdoor spaces in order to hone in on key growing elements. We will look for the fertility of the soil, the directions and level of sunlight, and discuss the overall desires of your vision, whether flatbeds or raised beds, gardens for aesthetic pleasure or for consumption. Do you wish to cut flowers from your garden for your table arrangements? Do you wish to harvest the fruits and vegetables from your plots for your summer and fall dinners? What is the story you wish to write with your personal garden? Rather than focusing on one element of a single plant, we design spaces that support a variety of experiences to create rich, lasting memories.

  • Rose

  • Flowers for Cutting

  • Herbs

  • Raised Bed

  • Indoor

Raised Plant Beds

Raised plant beds offer an opportunity for foliage to thrive in areas containing difficult soil while providing natural guidance of movement with formal borders and designed walkways. When filled with tall plants, raised beds can serve as privacy barriers and enclosures. Low plants in raised beds allow the plants to be elevated, with the enclosed borders naturally guiding the eye up. These beds can be enclosed by stone, brick, or wood to bring a controlled cohesion to your garden.

Planters

Planters add an additional artistic element to your garden as they provide a natural focal point to lure the eye. Selecting planters takes into consideration all of the growing elements of a bed planted garden with additional details specific to the container. We look at materials, such as stone and clay for their durability, temperature and moisture control, and added beauty. A great planter will support the growth of the plants it contains while providing complimentary beauty to your garden.

Vegetable Gardens

There’s a beautiful romanticism in being able to walk into one’s garden and feast upon its bounty. Creating the moment to “eat off the tree” is a well designed one. The wide variety of food-bearing plants have a wide range of growing needs, particularly in terms of sun exposure and moisture levels. If choosing a food-bearing plant as the focal point of your garden, we take into consideration the garden design as a whole. The positioning of all plants within the micro-climate of the garden ensures optimal growing success.

When designing vegetable gardens we will choose the right varietals for your space. To maximize the impact of your vegetable garden, we will discuss planting and harvesting times, yields for each plant, and ongoing care.

Children's Gardens

Including your children in the design of the family garden, is a great way to introduce them to the inner workings of the natural world. A special space designed just for them will encourage them to spend greater time outdoors, providing interactive elements that engage the senses and activates the imagination.

The children’s garden can be designed to teach how plants grow, involving them in the growing process so that they can harvest their own fragrant flowers and delicious foods.  As whimsical playspaces, gardens can attract butterflies or house fairies.

Garden Accessories

Garden accessories introduce a personal touch to your home garden. They can celebrate the changing of the seasons, reflect personal style, or express themes. We carefully select these accents with you so that they are masterfully integrated into your landscape. A fountain or statue should balance the aesthetics of your landscape, not compete with it.

Our portfolio of vendors and artisans offers a wealth of materials, styles, and designs in garden accessories. Enhancing your garden with a water feature, sculpture series, or feeders for wildlife, can elevate the look and experience of the space.

Patios & Masonry

Adding structure to your outdoor spaces extends possibilities for entertainment and use. Your yard, garden, and surrounding property is an extension of your home. Well designed patios and walkways add value to your home and make way for memorable experiences with your friends and family.

When designing your outdoor rooms, consider how you wish to use the room, and which design elements that are essential to its function and style. Enhancing this space may include patio floors, walkways, driveways, staircases and bridges. Stone, brick, or wood walls can create enclosed spaces and privacy. For year round enjoyment, we can include fireplaces, barbecues and other lighting, and heating elements.

Outdoor room elements that we design and select:

  • Decks

  • Terraces

  • Lighting

  • DrySpace (under second-story decks)

Outdoor Kitchens

The hearth is the heart of the home.

Building an outdoor kitchen extends the living and entertaining space of your home. Outdoor cooking brings friends and family together for celebrating and storytelling, and for taking advantage of those beautiful summer evenings. The addition of a kitchen brings new amenities and conveniences to your garden and with it many design considerations.

You want your outdoor spaces to feel natural and be fully functional. We consider the aesthetic style and the desired use of your kitchen to guide design choices. We work with you to design a space that is complementary to the exterior of your home and a natural integration into your landscape.

As a functional room, we will consider the space needed for preparation and storage, the necessary appliances which may require gas or electrical sources such as grills, smokers, refrigerators, wet bars, ice makers, and more. An outdoor kitchen needs to hold up to all of the regular cooking duties and face the elements that we experience on Long Island, including torrential rain, high wind, extreme temperature swings, and all types of storms. In addition to durability, the design considerations include how the kitchen can be maintained and reveal a timeless appearance.
